Caltowie was orginally the principal outstation of a local pastoral property known as 'Redbanks', sometimes called 'Carcowie' (Aboriginal for 'lizard waterhole'), subsequently corrupted to 'Caltowie'. The nearby Yackamoorundie Creek provided a good supply of water for teamsters hauling timber when settlement began in the mid 1800s.
The historic Caltowie Hotel has survived on its reputation for good food and comfortable accommodation, and is the hub of the small but close-knit community. There is a lovely playground and bowling club.
Close to Laura, Gladstone and Jamestown, visitors and residents are within a short drive to fuel, post offices, banks and supermarkets.
For further information please call in at the hotel.
